The Zen of Lavomatic

IMAG1805Q: When are something old and something new the same thing?  A: When you have dinner at a restaurant with a Laundromat in its history.  A riddle?  A Zen koan?

It’s Lavomatic Cafe in the Over-the-Rhine (OTR), a well-known hangout for locals and locavores in Cincinnati’s hottest neighborhood.  Rookwood Co tiles supply a comfortable warmth to casual seating and a mostly affordable menu.  Lavomatic Cafe has a style that melds with the young (and pseudo-young) OTR urban population.

So, four Chicagolandresses and two Cincinnatiennes tested the local waters this weekend at Lavomatic’s new (kinda, since 2008) location.

There were Zucchini Goat Cheese Fritters with Saffron Citrus Buffalo Sauce,

Bison Burgers with Pepper Bacon Onion Jam, Farmhouse Cheddar and Basil Aioli on Poblano Cheddar Buns,

Meat Loaf!

and Chocolate Pots de Crème, that fantastic push-me-over-the-edge silky smooth baked French egg custard.  (I counted three on the table.)

My food philosophy at all times is to support what the culinary world does well, not to thrust an opinion upon those whose work I know to be challenging on a good day.  In the case of Lavomatic Cafe, I would say, like, not love.
